يخدم هذا الكتاب كتاب الله، في علم عد الآي، وهو علم توقيفي مسموع من النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم بلغة الصحابة لمن بعدهم مع القراءة، وكانوا يهتمون به، ولذلك روي عن بعضهم أن القارىء كان إذا قرأ علىى أحدهم فأخطأ: أقامه.
وعلماء العدد هم: المكي والمدني الأول والمدني الثاني والكوفي والبصري والشامي، وبعضهم يفصّل الشامي إلى: دمشقي وحمصي، وهذه هي الأعداد التي عليها أئمة العدد، وعليها المؤلفون قديماً وحديثاً، وألّفت الكتب لهم.
وقد يختار بعض المؤلفين الأقدمين بعض الأعداد فقط فيذكرها، كما فعل إبن مهران في المبسوط في حاشيته، حيث لم يذكر المكي والشامي، ومثله الكتاب المنسوب إلى الفراء في عد الآي ولا زال مخطوطاً، هذا الكتاب لإبن شاذان، يجعل ما انفرد به المكي والشامي عداً وتركاً في بداية السورة، ويؤخر المختلف فيه مع غيرهما إلى فرش الخلاف.
ويعد الكتاب من أصول الكتب في علم العدد، ومن أقدمها، وكان اعتماد الإمام الشاطبي عليه؛ في قصيدته: (ناظمة الزهر) في علم العدد.
ولأهمية هذا الكتاب اعتنى بتحقيقه الأستاذ أبو عبد الرحمن الحميري وصححه وعلّق عليه وقارنه بأمهات كتب الفن، وقسم دراسته إلى أربعة فصول وهي على النحو التالي: الفصل الأول: ترجمة المؤلف، الفصل الثاني: دراسة الكتاب، الفصل الثالث: عمل المحقق في الكتاب، والفصل الرابع: مقدمات مهمة في هذا العلم.
