يخيل إلينا أنه يكفي تصفح سفر من الأسفار المقدسة، ثم قراءة فصوله، أو بعض مقاطع فيها، ثم استخراج عبرة روحية منها، أو الإشارة إلى معنى من معانيها "الخلاصية" الوفيرة، ثم طي السفر بارتياح لإيقاننا أن هذا كل ما في الأمر.
مثل هذه القراءة إنما يصنف قراءة تثقيفية، الغاية القصوى منها الوقوف على ما في ثنايا الكتاب. وهذا أمر حسن، لكنه ليس "كل ما في الأمر"، إذ ثمة أنواع قراءة أخرى تسير بنا إلى أعماق كلمة الكتاب المقدس التي لا تسبر، ولا بد من التمرس فيها كيما نستطيع الإبحار بعيداً، والإفادة كثيراً.
ولكن أنواع القراءة المشار إليها للتو تحتاج، كلها، إلى التزود بمعرفة أساسية، قد تتفاوت درجاتها على حسب المستوى المرام، وعلى وفق التهيئة التي نالها الراغب في مزيد من المعرفة "الكتابية". وما يسعى إليه هذا الكتاب هو تقديم مختارة من المعلومات الضرورية، التي لا يمكن لقارئ الكتاب المقدس تجاهلها، إنها ذات فائدة كبرى لمن يريد التمعن في النصوص المقدسة، إذ إنها تشحذ ذهنه لدى قراءتها.
