يقول هربرت أرنست بيتس: "يمكن للقصة القصيرة أنْ تكون أيَّ شيء يقرِّره كاتبها" والقارئ كاتبٌ ثانٍ للقصة، وبهذا تصير عملية قراءة قصة ظاهرة إنتاج ثقافي فكري سيكولوجي، تعمل على ترسيخ انفعالات مختلفة تنتجُ عن نصوصٍ هي الأقصر والأقل تعقيداً، تدفع إلى التفكير واستنتاج أسبابٍ مختلفة: لماذا يبدو الطفل الكردي عنيداً في يوم مثلج؟ لماذا يهتم الغرب بمقهى للعميان في مدينة صغيرة؟ لماذا ينزعج الشرطي من ابتسامة مواطن في ليلة المطر؟
