حينَ اقتربَتْ منها بالتحيَّة، مدَّت المرأة يديها الاثنتين. هذه هي بيروت إذًا... إمرأَةٌ شامخةٌ شُموخَ الأُسطورة، قويَّةٌ، جميلةٌ وغامضة. أبصرَتْ شالَها المقصَّبَ ينحدر من فوق كتفيها الناهضتَين، نزولاً، صَوْبَ تَكَسُّر خصرها فإِلى أطراف قدميها. وأَبصرَتْ أَساورَها، أَقراطَها وعقودَها الذهبيَّةَ المرصَّعةَ بالزمرّد والياقوت، تتدلَّى من ساعديها، مِن أُذنيها ومِن عنقها العاجيِّ الضاحك. وفي عينيها، رأَت ذلك الحنانَ الأُنثويَّ العميق والذي يبقى يخصّ، الأُمَّهات... وفوق شفتيها قرأَت وهجَ الدّفءِ والأُنس والطمأْنينة.
