التلوث يعني التغيير السلبي الذي يطرأ على أحد مكونات الوسط البيئي، والذي ينتج كلاً أو جزءاً من النشاط الإنساني الحيوي والصناعي، ويمكن تعريفه أيضاً بأي تغير غير مرغوب في الخواص الطبيعية أو الكيميائية أو البيولوجية للبيئة المحيطة والذي قد يسبب أضرار لحياة الإنسان أو غيره من الكائنات الأخرى. وقد يسبب أيضاً تلفاً في العمليات الصناعية، واضطراباً في الظروف المعيشية بوجه عام، وأيضاً إتلاف التراث والأصول الثقافية ذات القيمة الثمينة مثل المباني والمنشآت الأثرية.
والتلوث وإن يبدأ محلياً داخل حدود الدولة الواحدة إلا أن آثاره لن تبقى محصورة داخل تلك الحدود، إذ لا بد وأن تتجاوزها لتصل الدول الأخرى المجاورة وحتى البعيدة منها، فالتلوث لا يعترف بالحدود الوهمية التي أقامها الإنسان على الخرائط.
والكتاب الذي بين يدينا يهدف إلى تسليط الضوء على الأنشطة البشرية المختلفة المتسببة في التلوث البيئي وتزيد بالتالي من فرص اعتلال صحة الإنسان النفسية والفسيولوجية والاجتماعية، فإذا ما عرف السبب بطل العجب، فإذا ما عرف الإنسان أسباب مشكلة التلوث يصير بإمكانه مقاومتها وإبطال مفعولها لأجل أن يحيا سليماً ومعافى على الأرض التي استخلفه الله عليها.
أما الهدف الخاص من هذا الكتاب فهو منصب نحو إحداث تغيير في الاتجاهات السلوكية لدى المواطن تحارب كل شيء متسبب في التلوث وإهدار الموارد. فالمعرفة بحد ذاتها مطلوبة لكن ليست كافية إذا لم تخلق في الإنسان تغييراً جذرياً في سلوكه تجعله يتوقف عن التسبب في حدوث التلوث ودفعه للقيام بالإجراءات الإيجابية التي تحد منه.
لقد جاءت فصول هذا الكتاب مقسمة في تتابع منطقي لكي تخدم الهدف العام والخاص كالتالي: الفصل الأول يتناول تعريف التلوث البيئي وعالميته، ويتناول الفصل الثاني مشكلتي تلوث التربة وتلوث الغذاء، أما الفصل الثالث فيدرس التلوث بالحشرات والإشعاع والضوضاء، في حين خصص الفصل الرابع للتلوث الجوي، والفصل الخامس للتلوث المائي، والسادس لمسألة حماية البيئة.
