العز بن عبد السلام علم من أعلام الإسلام، ومن كبار المفكرين في القرن السابع الهجري، وأحد سلاطين العلماء الذين حاربوا الظلم والطغيان، وأمروا بالمعروف ونهوا عن المنكر وغيّروه، وقد اشتهر العز عند الباحثين بأنه فقيه مجتهد، أما كونه مفسراً مشهور مع أن له تفسيرين: أحدهما اختصار تفسير الماوردي "النكت والعيون"، والآخر ألفه ابتدأ في تفسير القرآن الكريم. ولم يشتهر بذلك أن تفسيرته لم يلقا الاهتمام اللازم من الدارسين والمحققين.
ومن هنا تأتي أهمية هذا الكتاب حيث درس الجانب التفسيري من حياة العز، فبين منهجه في تفسيره المختصر، وقارنه بتفسيره الذي ألفه، وقومه بذكر ما له وما عليه، كما ودرس واقع الحالة السياسية في عصر العز بن عبد السلام، وألقى الضوء على شيوخه وتلاميذه ومؤلفاته، وقدم نبذة مختصرة عرض فيها لحياته ولمكانته بين العلماء.
