يحكي هذا الكتاب حياة شاعر، عثر حظّه، وكبا خطوه، وقسا عليه دهره، فعسر عيشه، ونأى عنه صحبه، إلى أن لقي ربَّه، شاعر عاش أحداث عصره، وشارك أمته أفراحها وأتراحها، سرَّاءها وضرّاءها، مدح زعماءها ورثى رجالها الاحرار الوطنيين، واستوعب قلبه الكبير المآسي الإنسانية، فصاغها جميعها شعراً يفيض حزناً ولوعة وحسرة، شاعر أظلمت الدنيا في وجهه ولم تبتسم له إلا قليلاً، وُلد وفي فمه ملعقة من خشب، ولم ينل شيئاً من حطام الدنيا وعَرَضها، شاعر طبّقت شهرته الآفاق، وامتلك قلباً حانياً ونفساً طيبة رضية، وعاطفة جياشة، جعلته يهتز لأيِّ مصاب سواه أكان محلياً أم إقليمياً أم إنسانياً، صاغه شعراً من ذوب فؤاده، وحشاشة نفسه، أحبَّ أبناءَ شعبه فأحبّوه وتألم لآلامهم فأجلّوه، لم يخلده منصب ولا مال، ولكن خلّده شعره فكان خالداً في القلوب والنفوس.
يقول عنه خليل مطران: "حافظ أشبه بالوعاء يتلقَّى الوحي من شعور الأمة وأحاسيسها ومؤثراتها في نفسه، فيمتزج ذلك كلّه بشعوره وإحساسه، فيأتي منه القول المؤثر المتدفق بالشعور الذي يحسّ كل مواطن أنه صدى لما في نفسه".
ويقول عنه العقاد: "كان مفطوراً بطبعه على إيثار الجزالة والإعجاب بالصياغة والفحولة في العبارة".
إنَّ الشجرة التي لا تميل الرياح أغصانها، شجرة ميته الجذور، كذلك النفس التي لا تهزَّها المآسي نفس ماتت فيها معاني الإنسانية... وحافظ كان شجرة تميل الرياح أغصانها، شجرة حيَّة الجذور، حمل نفساً هزّتها المآسي فعاشت فيها معاني الإنسانية.
وقد قضى حافظ وهو يقول: "إذا تصفحت ديواني لتقرأني... وجدت شعر المرائي نصف ديواني".... وكأن لسان حاله يقول: "غير مأسوفٍ على زمن... ينقضي بالهمِّ والحزن".
