أخرجت من الرجال الممتازين في العلم وفي مناصب التدريس والقضاء، وهو بحث أساسه كتاب "معيد النعم ومبيد النقم" ومؤلفه تاج الدين السبكي من حيث هو مصلح مصري لمس نواحي الضعف في حكومة الأتراك وفي طبقات الأمة لذاك العهد فتصدى لنقدها بصراحة وجرأة تدعوان إلى الإعجاب ثم وصف وسائل الإصلاح، وهي تدور حول قيام كل بواجبه في دائرة عمله.
حرك فيَّ الرغبة في هذا البحث إعجابي بتاج الدين السبكي وما رأيته من أن مؤرخينا وإن وفوه حقه واعترفوه له بمكانته من حيث هو فحل من فحول العلماء وإمام من أئمة الدين لم يشيروا إليه من حيث هو رجل من رجال الإصلاح في مصر ولم يعنوا بمؤلفه الجليل في هذا الموضوع وهو "سعيد النعم وسبيد النقم" ومن عنوا به من المستشرقين الذين كتبوا عن تاج الدين وغيره من السبكية أخرجوا لنا مع دقة بحثهم صورة للكتاب ينقصها فيما أرى "اللون المحلي" تنقصها الصبغة المصرية وعليها المعول في إدراك حقيقته.
وقد شفعت هذا البحث بإستقصاء أفراد السبكية رجالاً ونساء وذكر نبذة عن كل منهم بقدر ما تسمح المصادر التي تيسرت لي فإني رأيت من كتبوا عن السبكية قد اقتصروا على البارزين منهم، وفي المصادر التاريخية عدد لا يستهان به منهم وإن لم يكونوا ككبارهم فأحببت أن تكون منهم مجموعة وافية.
