"""(بدين) كلمة سيئة في أمريكا، تجيش بالحكم الأخلاقي مثل (غبي) أو (وغد)، وهي ليست وصفًا مثل (قصير) أو (طويل). لذلك استبعدَت كلمة ""بدين"" من مفرداتها. لكن الكلمة عادت إليها الشتاء الماضي، بعد ثلاثة عشر عامًا تقريبًا، حين غمغم رجل يقف خلفها في طابور وهي تدفع ثمن كيس كبير من رقائق التورتيلا: ""لا يحتاج البدين إلى أكل هذا الهراء!"" فنظرت إليه مندهشة، وشاعرة بالإهانة (...) لقد كانت بدينة. نطقت كلمة ""بدينة"" ببطء، محرّكة إياها للخلف والأمام، وتذكرت كل الأمور الأخرى التي تعلّمت ألا تقولها بصوت عالٍ في أمريكا. لقد كانت بدينة؛ ليست ممتلئة أو خشنة؛ بل بدينة. وهي الكلمة الوحيدة التي بدت صادقة. وقد تجاهلت أيضًا الجمود في روحها (...) كانت تشعر به منذ مدة، في الإعياء الصباحي من الإنهاك، والكآبة غير المحدودة، صاحبته اشتهاءات دون ملامح ورغبات دون شكل، وأفكار خيالية موجزة عن حيوات أخرى يمكن أن تحياها."" ما الذي يعنيه حقًّا أن يحاول أحد أن يُصبح ""أمريكيًّا""؟ ولماذا توجد هناك مصطلحات ونكات تُطلَق على العائدين من الغرب إلى ديارهم بصفات متغيّرة وأساليب مختلفة تُثير حفيظة أولئك الذين لم يغادروا قط؟ تحكي ""أمريكانا"" صراع إفيملو وأوبنز، الحبيبان النيجيريّان الجامعيّان اللذان فرّقتهما أحلام الهِجرة إلى العالم الجديد متوقّعَين أن يجدا فُرصًا للإبداع والانطلاق والحياة، فيصطدمان بجدران كثيرة تدفعهما إلى الافتراق خمس عشرة سنة يصارعان فيها العالم الذي يتأمْرَك أمامهما دون أن يرفع أحد صوته، باعت إفيملو في أمريكا جسدها مرّة، ونظّف أوبنز في لندن الحمامات. لكنهما حين يعودان إلى ديارهما، يُفاجآن بتعامل الناس الراقي لهما كونهما عائدين من العالم الجديد، فيوضعان في طبقة أعلى، ليلتقيا مجدّدًا ويبدآ في ديارهما قصّة أخرى أشدّ قسوة من الأولى."
