سقنا هذه المقدمة القصيرة لتبيان الغاية التي توخاها الإمام الجليل السيوطي في كتابه (شرح شواهد المغني) والذي نقوم على نشره الآن، وقد ألفت في النحو كتب كثيرة وقام على خدمتها رجال أفاضل علماء، كان أبعدهم سيطاً وأكثرهم ذكراً جمال الدين بن هشام الأنصاري المتوفي سنة 761هـ فقد ألف في هذا الباب عدة كتب أشهرها وأعظمها (مغني اللبيب عن كتب الأعاريب) والذي أصبح أهم مرجع في نحو اللغة العربية لا زال يتدارسه أهل العربية حتى زماننا، لذلك وضعت عليه عشرات الحواشي والشروح ليسهل حفظه، وابن هشام من أكثر النحويين استثمار للشواهد وإيراداً لها سواء كان من القرآن الكريم والحديث الشريف أو المثل السائر، أو بالشعر والنثر.
وقد لاحظ الجلال السيوطي أن إتمام الفائدة وتحقيقاً لصحة الإستشهاد أن ينسب كل قول لقائله ويحل ما يشكل من لفظ أو معنى لفظ، وأن يعرِّف بصاحب الشاهد فكان كتابه هذا (شرح شواهد المغني).
والكتاب على ضخامته ليس للسيوطي فيه إلا الجمع والترتيب، وأن كان لا يخلو من بدوات أو فقرات يعبر السيوطي عن رأيه فيها، وهو مع هذا كله كلف نفسه جهداً وصبراً ومشقة، إذ لم يكتف بذكر الشاهد واسم قائله، وإنما يدرج القصيدة كاملة التي منها الشاهد، وإن لم يكن فقسما كبيراً منها، أو أشهر أبيات القصيدة مع تفسير ما أشكل من كلماتها وصعب.
وإن كان يوجد إختلاف في الرواية فإنه يدرج كافة الإختلافات والروايات مع إسناد كل قول إلى قائله، وقد أودع كتابه كثيراً مما حوته كتب اللغة والشعر، وبذل مجهوداً مشكوراً في ترتيب ما نقله ووضعه في محله، وهو ما يدل على سعة إطلاعه وإحاطته الشاملة، إلى أمانة في النقل وذكر المرجع الذي نقل عنه، ولربما نجد أحياناً أنه يتصرف في العبارة أو يبتر قسماً منها، وأنا بذلك لا أتهم السيوطي مما نلاحظه الآن في مخطوطاتنا وأن الأصل بذلك تخليط الذي يخط الكتاب أو صعوبة قراءة الحظ...
