في هذا العمل مقاربة تحليلية تأليفية ترصد المضامين المتعلقة بمسألة الحرية في مدونة الشيخ ابن عاشور وترجعها إلى النظام الفكري الذي نبعت منه، وإلى المرجعيات التي استندت إليها، هاجسها الأساسي في ذلك الكشف عن الإشكالية التالية: كيف أمكن لشيخ زيتوني منظور إليه على أنه من رموز الثقافة التقليدية أن يتناول مسألة الحرية، وهي من ابرز قضايا الفكر الحداثي؟ وهل انكفأ إلى المنظومة التقليدية التي تعلمها وعلمها، وكان رأس المؤسسة التي تمثلها أم انفتح المنظومة الحديثة واستفاد منها؟
وقد تم معالجة تلك الإشكالية في إطار تخطيط يضم تمهيداً يقع في مدخلين، سعى الأول منهما للتعريف بالشيخ محمد الطاهر ابن عاشور وبمدونته، وخصص المدخل الثاني لمسألة الحرية في الفكر العربي الإسلامي القديم وتطور طرحها في الفكر الإصلاحي الحديث والمعاصر، وإلى ذلك يضم متن هذا البحث بابين رئيسيين جاء أولهما تحت عنوان مسألة الحرية عند الشيخ ابن عاشور: إشكالية التحرر والتحرير، وناقش في الثاني الحرية ومتعلقاتها عند الشيخ ابن عاشور.
