جاءت هذه الدراسة لتلخص سيرورة الجهود التي بذلت من أجل الكشف عن العلاقة بين ما هو طبيعي وفطري وموروث لدى الطفل من جهة بما هو بيئي مكتسب وتربوي، من جهة بما هو بيئي مكتسب وتربوي، من جهة أخرى وما أفرزته هذه العلاقة من نظريات وتفسيرات، واتجاهات. وما ترتب عليها من نتائج وانعكاسات وتداعيات على التربية وممارستها وكيف غيرت التربية تلك المكتشفات لصالحها وللطفل على حد السواء. وتوخياً للدقة الموضوعية، جاء كل ذلك موثقاً، ومرتبطاً بسياقه التاريخي بمكانة وزمانه وبأصحابه، مع التفسير والتحليل كلما اقتضى الأمر، مشفوعاً بالصور والرسوم البيانية مما يساعد على الفهم والاستيعاب من جهة، وما يثير تأمل القارئ وتفكيره لإبداء رأيه من جهة أخرى. ليكون بحق "مرجعاً لعلم نفس التربية" أو بحثاً في العلاقة بين ما هو فطري وموروث لدى الطفل، بما هو بيئي من فعل التربية. إنها محاولة لتحديد المعالم لفلسفة تربوية باتجاه الأصول التي ينبغي أن يستنبط منها علم نفس التربية العتيد موضوعاته، وفلسفة للتربية حقوقها وآفاتها، لما يلقي الضوء على التطورات التي طرأت على التربية نتيجة التقدم في مجالات العلوم الأخرى التي كان لها من الطفل والطفولة ميداناً لمباحثتها، موضوعات ومناهج.
