يتمحور هذا الكتاب حول أهمية الحياة الفضل للإنسان، فإذا كان من حق أي مسلم أن يسعى لبلوغ حياة أفضل، فما هي هذه الحياة، هل هي في الدار الدنيا أم في الدار الآخرة؟ والجواب يأتي عند الباحث الشيخ عباس أمين حرب العاملي في كتابه الموسوم بـ "الوصايا العرفانية والأخلاقية" الذي جمع فيه طائفة مفيدة قيّمة من محاضرات وكتابات لأبرز علماء العرفان والأخلاق، وقد وزعه إلى عدة فصول، ذكر في كل فصل منها مجموعة من القصص في هذا الكتاب.
فكان الفصل الأول كتابات خاصة بالمؤلف تشتمل على: الشباب وعلم العرفان والقراءات الروحية والغيبية، أما الفصل الثاني فكان: برامج للسالكين على درب العرفان وهي رسالة العارف الشيخ محمد حسين الأصفهاني المعروف باكمباني، ورسالة فخر المجتهدين الميرزا جواد الملكي. ويجمع الفصل الثالث: مقتطفات من مواعظ العارف الميرزا جواد الملكي، وفي الفصل الرابع: مقتطفات من مواعظ آية الله الشيخ محمد تقي بهجت، ويتابع في الفصل الخامس: مقتطفات من الأسئلة والإجابات الخاصة بالشيخ محمد تقي بهجت، ويأتي الفصل السادس: رسالة في فلسفة الأخلاق والمذاهب الأخلاقية وأهم ما قام بتفسيره الفيلسوف الإسلامي السيد محمد حسين الطباطبائي. ويختتم الكتاب بقول الإمام علي عن أهمية القرآن في حياة المسلمين: "قراءة القرآن أفضل من الذكر، والذكر افضل من الصدقة، والصدقة افضل من الصيام، والصوم جُنة من النار".
