التاريخ كما يقول ابن خلدون هو في ظاهره لا يزيد عن أخبار الأيام والدول، والسوابق من القرون الأُولى. تنمو فيها الأقوال، وتُضرب فيها الأمثال، ويجعلنا نكتشف أسرارًا وحقائقَ ومعلوماتٍ عن عصر الأنبياء وسياستهم في التعامل، وأيضًا سياسة الملوك وتعاملاتهم، وسرد الأخبار والخبايا التي تعود لزمن محدد.
من هنا، وحين نحث ونذكّر بمطالعة وقراءة سير الأولين، حكامًا وعلماء وساسة وغيرهم، فإنما ليس من باب الترف الفكري، بل من باب السعي للحصول على الإلهام والعظة والتجربة والفائدة للإنسان نفسه قبل غيره، أو هكذا المفترض أن يكون نهج التعامل مع التاريخ ودروسه العديدة العجيبة.
يأتي هذا الكتاب ليقوم بسرد قصة في حياة شخصية معينة، سواء اتفقنا معها أم لم نتفق، ومن ثم البحث في ثنايا القصة عن فكرة أو عظة أو عبرة، وتقديمها بصورة ميسرة واضحة، دون الدخول في كثير من التفاصيل، فالكتاب ليس كتابًا تاريخيًّا بقدر ما هو التقاط شذرات ولمحات مفيدة من هذا التاريخ البشري الحافل بالكثير والكثير، يستثمرها إنسان اليوم لتقويم حاضره وبناء غده. فهذه هي فكرة التأمل في التاريخ.
