لقد حظيت الرواية في العقد الأخير بإهتمام خاص في الأدب العربي الحديث، وتشهد على ذلك وفرة الإصدارات في مجال الرواية، وتوجّه كثير من الباحثين إلى دراسة الرواية.
لذلك كان إختيار موضوع "بداية النص الروائي" محاولة لتقديم رؤية جديدة تخدم النص الروائي إنطلاقاً من إعتبار هذا النوع الأدبي إبداعاً فنياً مادته اللغة، ولُحمته خصائص الجنس الأدبي نفسه.
لقد تأثرت الكثير من الأعمال النقدية بالإتجاهات الغربية في النقد، وهي إتجاهات تفصل بين الشكل والمضمون، إن هذه الدراسة ترى أن النظرة إلى الرواية، وتحليلها، لا ينبغي أن تفصل بين الشكل والمضمون (المبنى والمعنى)، إنما يجب أن يكون النظر إلى الشكل بإعتباره جزءاً من الدلالة، وأن يكون تحليل العناصر والمكوّنات هو السبيل للوصول إليها.
وقد سعت هذه الدراسة إلى البحث في كيفية تشكّل المعنى داخل النص الروائي، بإعتباره وشيجة ممتدة من أول كلمة حتى آخرها، وكانت بداية النص الروائي المحور الذي ركّزت عليه هذه الدراسة، في سبيل تتبع الدلالة داخل النص، ومن خلالها جرى التمييز بين أنواع البدايات المختلفة، فالرواية ليست مجرّد حكاية، ولا هي مجرّد نص لغوي.
وقد أُقيم أود البحث على فصول سبعة، فقد خصص الفصل الأول للقضايا النظرية المتعلقة بمفهوم البداية، بغية تحديد الأطر المنهجية للبحث، إذ تمت فيه مناقشة طبيعة البداية في الأدب عامة، وخصوصية الأجناس الأدبية في ذلك، وقد جرت بقية فصول البحث على وتيرة واحدة، إذ كانت بداية المكان محور الإهتمام في الفصل الثاني من خلال ثلاث نماذج روائية، تقدمها مدخل نظري حول طبيعة المكان الروائي، وعلاقته بالبداية، تلاه الفصل الثالث متمحوراً حول بداية الشخصية، والرابع حول بداية الزمن، والخامس حول بداية الحوار، والسادس حول بداية الحدث، والسابع حول البداية ما وراء روائية، وقد خالف الفصل السابع بقية فصول الرواية في عدد الروايات المدروسة بإشتماله على روايات ست، نظراً لوجود أنواع فرعية داخل ذلك الفصل، جرى التمييز بينها من خلال نموذجين؛ أما الخاتمة فقد تضمنت خلاصة البحث.
