شاع استخدام البارود لأغراض التفجير جميع المناجم في أوروبا في القرن السابع عشر، بل وشاع استخدامها في بداية القرن الثامن عشر حتى في أعمال البناء. وقد أدت الحاجة الملحة لتطوير عملية التفجير بشكل أكثر كفاءة إلى إنتاج مواد متفجرة حتى انتهى الأمر إلى اكتشاف العالم الإيطالي "امكانيو موبررو" مادة الينتروجلسرين" التي استطاع العالم السويدي "الفرد توبل" هو وإخوانه تطويرها واستخدامها لتفجير صخور الجرانيت الصلبة في السويد وبكفاءة عالية، وأدى ذلك إلى أن أنشأ هذا الرجل أول شركة متفجرات عام 1864م لتضيع الينتروجلسرين. تلك كانت الخطوة الأولى على طريق مشوار تلك الوسيلة ذات الحدين، والتي طوعها الإنسان لأهدافه التدميرية أكثر من استعمالها لوسائله السلمية.
وفي هذا الكتاب يعرض المؤلف للتقنية الهندسية للمتفجرات يتحدث أولاً عن المصطلحات المستخدمة في المتفجرات أثناء عملية التفجير ثم يستعرض أنواع المتفجرات مبيناً كيفية استخدامها ذاكراً من ثم نظرية التفجير وكيفية وتطبيقها التي شرحها ضمن الخطوات التالية: شق الأخاديد، تسوية الأطراف، تهيئة ثقوب التفجير، لينتقل من بعد ذلك للحديث عن عملية التفجير في المناطق المأهولة وتحت الماء ليقدم من ثم نماذج خاصة لاستخدام المتفجرات وأجهزة التفجير وأردف ذلك بمحلق ضمّنه المؤلف مجموعة توصيات هي بمثابة احتياطات للسلامة تجب مراعاتها عند التعامل مع المتفجرات من أول مرحلة والى آخر مرحلة فيها. تلك التوصيات التي تم التوصل إليها تعتبر كفيلة إلى حد كبير بتجنب الكثير من المشاكل التي قد يتعرض لها العاملون في هذا الحقل وفي جميع المراحل.
