هذا كتاب في الفقه الإسلامي على مذهب عالم المدينة مالك بن الأنس الأصبحي الذي ورد فيه - على ما تأوله بعض العلماء - الخبر الصحيح: "يوشِكُ أن يَضْربَ الناسُ أكبادَ الإبل، فلا يجدون عالماً أعلم من عالم المدينة"؛ يضعه المؤلف بين يدي طلابه والمشتغلين به، وسائر المتفقهين في دين الله، وقد نسله مما تيسَّر له من مصنفات في هذا المذهب الجليل، دون أن يقلد فيه كتاباً بعينه يكون أصلاً له، لا في متنه ولا في شرحه؛ وقد عمل على تهذيب فقه هذا المذهب، أحكاماً وأدلة، ومن أجل ذلك سماه "المهذب من الفقه المالكي وأدلته".
وقد سلك المؤلف طريقة المتون المجردة، فلخص مادته الأوَّلية من "الإرشاد" و"التلقين" و"عقد الجواهر" و"أقرب المسالك"، وغيرها من المتون المعتمدة، ثم وضع تلك المادة الملَخَّصة في صورتها المناسبة، على وفق ما يقتضيه المنهج المنطقي من التفصيل والتسلسل، فجعله كُتباً، كل كتاب منها يندرج تحته جملة من الأبواب، وفصل الأبواب فصولاً، ورتِّب فيه الأبحاث في جملتها وتفصيلها، وسهَّل لغته ألفاظاً وتراكيب، تسهيلاً لفهم معانيه...
وقد اعتمد في تخريج أدلته التي علقها في الهامش على كتب الأدلة المصنفة في المذهب، كـ"المعونة"، و"الإشراف"، و"الذخيرة"، بالإضافة إلى الكتب التي اعتنى بآيات الأحكام وأحاديثها، كتفسير القرطبي وابن العربي، و"الموطأ" وسائر كتب السنّة وشروحها، وخاصة كتاب "التمهيد"؛ وفي الجملة فقد حاول المؤلف أن يقتصر على الأحكام العملية جهد الإستطاعة، فتحاشى نوادر المسائل وغرائبها ودقائقها وما هو منها أشبه بالخيال منه بالحقيقة، وقلَّل من ذكر أحكام العبيد إلا ما تدعو إليه الضرورة.
