لقد جاءت فكرة هذا الكتاب عن "جغرافية الموارد المائية" من النقص الواضح في مثل هذا الفرع من فروع المعرفة الجغرافية، وإن كانت الآراء مختلفة حول تبعية هذه الدراسة، وعموماً، فهي وإن كانت تابعة للمهتمين بالدراسات الهيدرولوجية، إلا أن هذا الكتاب يتناولها كمجال حيوي من مجالات الجغرافيا الطبيعية وهو الغلاف المالي.
ويحتوي هذا الكتاب على جزئين، في إحدى عشر فصلاً، يختص الجزء الأول منه بالدراسة العامة لموارد المياه وصورها على سطح الأرض، ويبدأ الفصل الأول بدراسة عامة للغلاف المائي، ومصادره، ونشأة المياه، ودورتها في الطبيعة، والتوازن المائي العالمي، ومعرفة تطور الفكر الهيدرولوجي، ويتناول الفصل الثاني صور الماء والكيفية التي يوجد بها في الغلاف الجوي.
ويبحث الفصل الثالث في صورة من صور الماء على سطح الأرض وهي الجريان السطحي من خلال العوامل المؤثرة فيه، ومظاهره، وتحليل البيانات الهيدرولوجية الخاصة به، ودراسة الفيضانات وإمكانية السيطرة عليها، وكذلك أهم إستخدامات الأنهار؛ وأما الفصل الرابع فيهتم بدراسة المياه الجوفية والخزانات الحاملة لها، ومظاهرها وتوزيعها الجغرافي، وخصائصها، وأثرها على الإستخدام البشري.
ويهتم الفصل الخامس بدراسة مياه البحار والمحيطات من حيث التوزيع الجغرافي، وخصائص تلك المياه، وتحركاتها، وأهم إستخداماتها، ويتناول الفصل السادس دراسة البحيرات والمستنقعات في العالم من حيث ظروف نشأتها، وخصائصها العامة، وإستخدامات الإنسان لها.
أما الجزء الثاني من الكتاب فيتناول الدراسة التطبيقية لموارد المياه بالوطن العربي، ويبدأ بالفصل السابع الذي يتناول مصادر المياه العذبة في الوطن العربي، أما الفصل الثامن فيتناول الإمكانات المائية الحالية والمستقبلية في الوطن العربي، ويختص الفصل التاسع بمناقشة مشكلة المياه في الوطن العربي من خلال التعرف على مدى العجز المائي، والصراعات الدولية على المياه به، ويتناول الفصل العاشر أساليب ووسائل تنمية الموارد المائية بالوطن العربي وأخيراً يعرض الفصل الحادي عشر لبعض مشاريع تنمية المياه في الوطن العربي.
