المقامة هي حكاية تقال في مقام معين وتشتمل على الكثير من درر اللغة وفرائد الأدب والحكم والأمثال والأشعار النادرة التي تدل على سعة اطلاع وغزارة مادة وطول باع وعلو مقام في عالم الأدب.
وإن الحريري يعد على رأس الكتّاب الذين تخصصوا في المقامات من خلال مقاماته التي وضعها والتي حظيت بكمٍّ كبير من الشروحات والتعليقات. ويعتبر الشرح الذي بين أيدينا من أهم الشروحات وأغزرها، والذي وضعه الشريشي والذي قال أنه لم يدع كتاباً ألف في شرح ألفاظها وإيضاح أغراضها إلا وعكف على استيفائه بسيطاً كان أم مختصراً، ولم يترك باباً منها فائدة إلا واستخرجها، ولا نكتة إلا علقها، ولا غريبة إلا استلحقها. وقد قام الشارح بالتعريف بالبلدان والأمصار المذكورة في المقامات، ثم شرح غريب الألفاظ والأمثال، ووضع تراجم وافية للمشهورين من الأدباء والأمراء والقادة والشعراء، وكان للشعر الأندلسي نصيب وافر حيث أورد مجموعة كبيرة منه.
