أطلقت تسمية الكيمياء العضوية قديماً على المواد التي كان يعتقد أنها تتكون في جسم الكائن الحي نباتاً وحيواناً، وأنه لا مجال للحصول عليها إلا منه، وذلك لتمييزها عن المواد التي يحصل عليها من المعادن والصخور والمعروفة بالمواد غير العضوية. وتأكد خطأ هذا الاعتقاد بعد أن تمكن عالم ألماني يسمى فوهلر (1828) wohler من تحضير مادة عضوية وهي اليوريا من مادتين عضويتين هما ثاني أكسيد الكربون (CO2) أو الأمونيا (NH3).
والكتاب الذي بين أيدينا هو في "الكيمياء العضوية" وهو موجه إلى طلاب كليات العلوم والطب والهندسة والزراعة والصيدلة والمعاهد العليا. وقد جاء الكتاب باللغة العربية وذلك للقناعة بزيادة استيعاب هذه المادة عندما يدرسها الطالب بلغته الأصيلة، وحتى لا يكون مشتت الذهن والجهد بين ترجمة المادة العلمية واستيعابها وبأن هذا الكتاب سيلبي حاجة ملحة لدارسي الكيمياء العضوية خلال إعدادهم لتخصصاتهم في المجالات الأخرى.
ولقد تم عرض معلومات هذا الكتاب باعتمادها على الأسس الإلكترونية وتركيب الذرة وعلاقة ذلك بنوع الروابط الكيميائية والتي تمّ إفراد الفصل الأول لها من الكتاب، وأيضاً على فهم ميكانيكية التفاعل بطريقة بسيطة قدر الإمكان ذلك حتى يتمكن الطالب من تنبؤ نواتج التفاعلات الكيميائية على أسس من الفهم أكثر مما يعتمد على قوة الحفظ. هذا وقد تمّ وضع رؤوس المواضيع والمصطلحات العلمية وأسماء المركبات العلمية باللغة الإنجليزية فضلاً عن العربية حتى تمكن الطالب من متابعة الموضوع في أي مرجع آخر أو يتابع دراسته بعد هذا المقرر نحو مقررات أعلى.
