إن من أفضل الطاعات, وخير ما صرفت فيه نفائس الأوقات, الاشتغال بالعلم الشرعي الذي يقرب من رب الأرض والسماوات, ومن أعظمه نفعاً وأكثره عوائد علم الحديث, الذي به يعرف صحيح الحديث من سقيمه, وصدقه من مكذوبه, وسالمه من معلوله, ومتصله من منقطعه. وقد بدأ تدوين الحديث في وقت مبكر من حياة هذه الأمة المباركة, فكان عبد الله بن عمرو بن العاص- يكتب كل ما يسمعه من النبي عليه السلام, وهكذا كان الأمر لمن بعده إلى أن رأى عمر بن عبد العزيز- أن يجمع حديث رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ويحفظه خشية ضياعه. فجمع في قراطيس وأوراق على غير ترتيب معين, ثم شاع التدوين في النصف الأول من القرن الهجري الثاني بين العلماء, حتى أصبح من النادر ألا ترى لأحدهم تصنيفاً أو جامعاً فيه بعض أبواب في الحديث. كما تم في هذ الكتاب ذكر البلاد والقرى التي دخلها, وقد بلغت الثمانين, خرج في كل بلد أو قرية عن واحد من أهلها أو القادمين إليها حديثاً, أو أثراً, أو شعراً, أو حكاية. آتياً في غضون ذلك بفوائد, راوياً الكثير من عيون الزوائد. ونبه المؤلف في أثناء الكتاب على أشياء ركب فيها المصنف خلاف الصواب, غير منتقص منه, ولا طاعن فيه, وإنما استيضاحاً للحق والصواب, واسترباحاً للأجر والثواب, وإنما الأعمال بالنيات.
