إنها مُذكَّرات رستم باز (1819- 1902)، الذي ولد في بلاط الأمير بشير الثاني، ورافقه في منفاه حتى وفاته وكان مدبّر شؤونه، وحافظ الكثير من أخباره وأسراره، وهي تسلّط الضوء على العديد من الأحداث التي جرت خلال فترة حكم الأمير، وكذلك على فترة سنوات المنفى العشر، المعتبرة الأكثر غموضاً في حياة هذه الشخصية المثيرة للجدل.
بين العلّامة فؤاد أفرام البستاني الذي عمل على تحقيق هذه المُذكِّرات وتفسيرها وفهرستها مفتتحاً بها سلسلة منشورات الجامعة اللبنانية سنة 1955، وبين الصحافي والباحث إسكندر شديد الذي وضعها بلغة أنيقة ومفهومة من أبناء هذا الجيل من دون الإبتعاد عن الأصل العامي الدارج، ارتدت مُذكِّرات رستم باز الحلّة التي يستسيغها القارئ الساعي إلى المعرفة والمتعة ويجد فيها الباحث معطيات وفيرة عن مرحلة كانت ولا تزال تسيل الكثير من الحبر.
- يا أمير، أنا مُتوجِّه إلى لبنان للنظر في أحواله، وأخبروني بأنك حكمتَ لبنان خمساً وخمسين سنة، ألا تُخبرني عن سكانه ما أخلاقهم وأطباعهم، وما هي الواسطة التي مكّنتك من الحكم كل هذه المدة؟.
-أفندم، صحيح أنني حكمتُ كلّ هذه المدة، ولكن كلّ ثلاث سنين أو أربع أو أكثر كانوا يعملون عليَّ ثورة، ولم ينجحوا في واحدة، وكنت أقتل، وأشنق، وأحبس، وأضرب بلا معارضٍ حتى يُذَلّوا.
وأما أطباعهم، فيكفي مثلُ أعرضه لدولتك: أفندم، يوجد في لبنان وغيره طير يُسمّى أبو فار، يصطاده، وهو أكبر من طير الباز، فهذا يجلس على شجرة عالية، فلما تُشرِق الشمس، ينظر إلى خياله، فيجده أكبر من حقيقته، فيقول: "اليوم لازم أصطاد جملاً"، وكلّما علت الشمس يصغر، فينتقل من جبلٍ إلى أصغر حتى تصير الشمس في قبلة الفلك، وتكبسه من فوق رأسه، فينظر إلى خياله، فيجده أصغر من الحقيقة، فيرجع إلى صيد الفار...
