مِنَ «العَربَانة» بدأ وإلى «العَربَانة» عاد.
هو عباس الطفل الذي حوّلته ظروف الحياة إلى رجلٍ. تكبّد الفقر، وألم اليُتم، فدخل السوق وعالمه يافعاً يجر عَربَته، وسريعاً قرر أن يصير رجلاً (رجلاً صغيراً)،. واجه الحياة بشجاعة تفوق عمره وزمنه، تنقّل بين عمل وآخر، وبين دولة وأخرى، آمن بنفسه فنجح. ولكن ما أعطته الحياة له بيد أخذته منه بأخرى.
البداية النصية – الزمانية - للرواية تبدأ في ثمانينيات القرن العشرين في قرية السنابس – البحرين، والنهاية النصية الزمنية تكون مع انتهاء رحلة بطلها وعودته من الخارج إليها بعد ما يقارب الأربعة عقود من الزمن. وبين البداية والنهاية أحداث ووقائع يتداخل فيها العام بالخاص، والداخل بالخارج، فتحضر حرب الخليج وتداعياتها، مثلما تحضر قضية تعنيف المرأة ومآلاتها. ومثلها قضية عمالة الأطفال وإن كانت في هذه الرواية طوعية بدافع الإنجاز والترقي إلا أنها تعكس واقعاً مزرياً يسرق مراحل الطفولة وأحلامها بشكل أو بآخر.
ما يميز هذه الرواية هو قيامها بوظيفة ثقافية – انثروبولوجية، حولت النص، إلى ما يشبه لوحة فولكلورية تجمع كل ألقرية وحضارة البحرين في أسواقها التراثية القديمة، مثلما يحددها لنا الراوي: سوق مدينة جدحفص، سوق المقاصيص، سوق اللحم، سوق الطواويش، سوق الذهب،. يضاف إليها قائمة من الأطعمة الشهية؛ شاي عبد القادر، عدس مقهى حاجي، سمبوسة بشير، كباب مندلي وتكّة أمين… وكل هذا يأتي في استرسال سردي آسر، هو أعمق ما كُتب عن البحرين وناسها في السرد العربي المعاصر.
