يمتاز هذا الكتاب باستخدام فكر ومبادئ علم الهندسة، ونظم الذكاء الاصطناعي-النظم الخبيرة في تناوله لموضوع هندسة المعرفة وكذلك موضوع تكنولوجيا المعلومات، ثم صياغة أنموذج مقترح لنظام هندسة المعرفة يهدف إلى تمثيل آلية قدرات الذهن البشري في استخلاص المعرفة والعمل على هيكلتها وتنظيمها تمهيداً لخزنها في قاعدة المعرفة بالشكل الذي يساهم في تحقيق أنشطة إدارة المعرفة في نشر المعرفة ومشاركتها في داخل وخارج المنظمة مع توفير إمكانية تحديثها واسترجاعها.
وقد تناول الكتاب موضوع هندسة المعرفة من خلال ثلاث فصول رئيسة هي المكونات المادية، والمكونات البشرية، بالإضافة إلى العمليات التي تمثل الآلية التي يعتمدها النظام في تحقيق أهدافه. اهتم الكتاب أيضاً بموضوع تكنولوجيا المعلومات باعتباره المدخل والأساس الذي يعتمد عليه نظام هندسة المعرفة مع التركيز على مكوناته الأساسية وهي المكونات المادية للحاسوب، والبرمجيات، والمكونات البشرية، والإجراءات.
ومن خصائص هذا الكتاب أيضاً، تناوله للأبعاد الأساسية للموضوعين الاساسيين فيه، فقد تناول موضوع الهندسة وموضوع المعرفة بفصلين منفصلين تمهيداً للدخول إلى نظام هندسة المعرفة، وتمّ كذلك تعيين فصلين منفصلين عن التكنولوجيا وعن نظم المعلومات للدخول إلى موضوع تكنلوجيا المعلومات.
ومما يميز هذا الكتاب أيضاً... استعراضه لآراء مجموعة كبيرة من الباحثين والمختصين بالموضوعات التي تناولها الكتاب وخاصة فيما يتعلق بالمفاهيم والمداخل والمكونات، وكذلك اهتمامه بنشأت وتطور الكثير من المصطلحات الرئيسة التي تناولها لكتاب، إضافة إلى تزويد الكتاب بسرد المصطلحات وأسئلة للمناقشة في نهاية كل فصل فيه.
