مسرحية "وارث الريح" مقتبسة من أحداث محاكمة أمريكية شهيرة وقعت في عام 1952م، لمحاكمة معلم قام بتدريس تلاميذه نظرية التطور لتشارلز داروين مخالفاً بذلك قانون الولاية. عرفت هذه الحادثة رسمياً باسم محاكمة سكوبس، واشتهرت صحافياً باسم محاكمة القرد.
كانت القضية الضمنية أكبر بكثير من مجرد خرق قانون محلي. لقد كانت صراعاً دامياً بين التقليد والحداثة العلمانية في أمريكا كما وصفها البروفيسور دوج ليندر أستاذ القانون الجامعة ميسوري، في المؤتمر الذي أقيم بمناسبة مرور 75 عاماً على القضية، ويعتبر الدكتور ليندر أن محاكمة سكوبس عي أهم محاكمة في القرن العشرين، ويؤكد أنها تتفوق فكرياً وقانونياً وتاريخياً كثيراً على محاكمة أوجي سيمبسون الشهيرة بتهمة قتل زوجته وعشيقها، وكذلكم استجواب الرئيس بيل كلينتون بسبب فضيحة المتدربة مونيكا لوينسكي.
إن جوهر هذه القضية ليس حول صحة نظرية داروين أو خطئها، وبالتالي تعارض الدين مع العلم كما قد يتبادر لذهن القراء، بل حول الحق في حرية التفكير.
