مادة هذا الكتاب هو أطروحة قدمتها الباحثة لترصد من خلالها إشكالية الحرب في أدب الكاتبة العربية غادة السمان. وقد جاءت الأطروحة ضمن قسمين: الأول تحليل في ضوء علم الاجتماع الأدبي من ثلاثة فصول (وهو مادة هذا الكتاب). تناول الفصل الأول موقع العمل الأدبي لغادة السمان من "أدب الحرب" في الكتابات العربية المعاصرة، خصوصاً في الشرق. وتناول الفصل الثاني مكانة هذا العمل في المجتمع. بينما تناول الفصل الثالث علاقة الكاتبة بالقارئ.
وقد اعتمدت الباحثة في هذا القسم على الإحصائيات والمعلومات التي حصلت عليها من الكاتبة والناشرين والصحف والمجلات والمكتبات ومراكز التوثيق. وقامت بفرز وتصنيف (تبويب) هذه الإحصائيات والمعلومات حسب قواعد علم اجتماع الأدب.
وفي القسم الثاني قامت الباحثة بتحليل المضمون لقصتين قصيرتين، وللروايتين، فتابعت المحاور الرئيسية والمحاور المتفرعة عنها في الحياة اليومية والأحلام والكوابيس، متابعة الصور المتكررة التي تشكل "خيالاً" متطوراً من القصة القصيرة إلى الرواية، ومن الحلم إلى الكابوس، فالرؤيا التي تستهدف الكاتبة أن ترسمها في الذاكرة الجماعية للقرّاء.
