بمناسبة العام 2008 الذي أعلنه صاحب السمو الشيخ خليفة بن زايد آل نهيان رئيس دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة عاماً للهوية الوطنية؛ قررت نشر هذا الكتاب المختص بتقديم قراءات نقدية حول إتجاهات الفنون التشكيلية في الإمارات؛ تجاوباً مع الدعوة الكريمة من سموه، وذلك في سبيل دعم وإبراز المنجزات الوطنية في السياق الثقافي والجمالي.
لقد سبق الفن التشكيلي في الإمارات - بالرغم من حداثة نشأته - إلى العديد من المحطات المعاصرة، وتمحورت في ضمنه إتجاهات فنية وفكرية؛ مختلفة ومتعددة.
اليوم تشهد دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة مسيرة تنمية شاملة، والواقع يشهد على إحتلال الثقافة والفنون موقع الصدارة في تلك التنمية، فها هي المشاريع الثقافية والفنية العملاقة التي يعلن عنها بين الحين والآخر، وها هي المتاحف والمسارح والمعارض والصالات الفنية التي لا تعد، هذا بالاضافة إلى الجوائز القيمة للآداب والفنون، ولا حاجة بنا إلى ذكر مزيد من الشواهد على إهتمام الدولة بهذا المنحى.
