تكمن أهمية هذا الكتاب في البرهنة على استمرارية ضرورية الأخذ بالجيوبوليتيكا في الظروف العالم المستجدة. ولذلك أصاب المؤلف شارل زورغبيب في تسميته "الجيوبوليتيكا المعاصرة". وإضافة "مناطق الصدام" إلى التسمية أعطته البعد العلمي في الشمولية الجغرافية. كما أن المؤلف طرح الموضوع في منتهى البراعة بشموليته الكونية وبربط الجغرافي بالتاريخ، ولو بشكل غير مرئي تقريباً.
وقد طرح المؤلف في كتابه عشر قضايا -مشاكل حامية لم يحصل الحل النهائي لمعظمها بعد، ولا تزال مادة حية للتاريخ الحديث. وبالتالي لا يزال الكتاب يمثل مرجعاً لا غنى عنه للسياسي والعسكري، لرجل الدولة ورجل الاستراتيجيا في آن معاً.
