تبدو مشكلة المرأة وكأنها من المشكلات الشائكة المغرية، والتي يعالجها البشر منذ زمن بعيد دون الوصول إلى حل أو نتيجة مرضية، على الرغم من تعدد الحلول والنتائج واختلافها من زمن إلى آخر ومن مكان إلى آخر. إنها مشكلة تشبه المشكلات الميتافيزيقية الكبرى التي ما تزال البشرية تدور في حلقتها المفرغة. مرت قضية المرأة ومنذ وجود البشرية بأطوار عدة، لكن الذي يعنينا في هذا الجزء من سلسلة قضايا وحوارات النهضة العربية في العصر الحديث الذي اصطلحنا على تسميته بعصر النهضة العربية: وفي سبيل تتبع وثائقي وموضوعي لبروز وتطور هذه القضية قام المحرر بتتبع الموضوع في المصادر العربية الأساسية ومن مختلف وجهات النظر وخصوصاً في المراحل الأولى من القرنين التاسع عشر والعشرين وتم تقسيم المختارات إلى محاور إلى ثلاثة أقسام وتناول القسم الذي بين يدينا المناقشات والمناظرات الأولى عندما بدأت المرأة تعي قضيتها وتعلن عنها في الصحافة, ومطالبتها بالتعليم وحقوق أخرى، ثم حقوقها في المساواة مع الرجل، وتبعاً لذلك المقارنة بين عقل الرجل وعقل المرأة وبعدها مناقشات لموضوع الحجاب والسفور. أم القسم الثاني فيشتمل على نظرة المرأة إلى قضيتها ثم نظرة الرجل إلى قضية المرأة. وتخصص القسم الثالث في مناقشات حول العلاقة المتبادلة بين الرجل والمرأة ومقالات عامة حول تطور وضع المرأة حتى عام 1950.
