إن الداعي إلى كتابة هذه الرسالة سؤال سائل: عن المراد بالساق في قوله تعالى: "يوم يكشف عن ساق ويدعون إلى السجود فلا يستطيعون" ولأن البلوى بالتشبيه في هذا العصر قد انبعثت بعد أن أخدمها الأشاعرة على توالي القرون حررت هذه الرسالة حول ما ينبغي في آيات الصفات وأحاديثها عامة، وختمت بجوانب السائل عن المواد بالساق في الآية وفي حديث الصحيحين عن أبي سعيد الخدري أن الباري يوم القيامة يجعل العلامة بينه وبين من يعبده كشف ساقه، كما جعل في الخاتمة فصلاً بين فيه أن تقسيم التوحيد إلى ألوهية وربوبية, أسماء وصفات هو تقسيم مخترع لم يرد في كتاب ولا سنة.
