لقي النظام الحربي عند المسلمين شيئاً من الاهتمام عند مؤرخي الغرب من مستشرقين وغير مستشرقين، فظفرت الدولة العثمانية كما ظفرت الدولة المملوكية بقسط من هذا الاهتمام، دون أن تنال الفروسية المملوكية حظها من الدراسة مع العلم بأنها محور النظام المملوكي كله. وليس هذا البحث سوى محاولة لتكوين صورة واضحة للأسس التي قام عليها نظام الفروسية المملوكية وما طرأ عليها خلال عصر سلاطين المماليك (1250-1517) من تغيير وتعديل.
وتناول هذا البحث دراسة الأوضاع التاريخية في الشرق الأوسط في القرن الثاني عشر الميلادي، وشرح العناصر التي تألف منها الجيش المملوكي، ووصف حياة المملوك منذ أن جلبه تاجره إلى مصر حتى تحرر بعد أن فرغ من دراسته بالطباق وغدا فارساً. يضاف إلى ذلك ما ورد في هذا البحث عن العوامل التي تحكمت في مستقبل الفارس وموارده والعلاقات التي تربطه بأستاذه وزملائه في الرق والعتق والتربية والخدمة وأهمية ذلك كله في قوة نظام الفروسية وضعفه.
