وسنرى من هذا الفصل والفصول التالية أن مقدرتنا على حل المعادلات التفاضلية الخطية لا يحدها سوى قدرتنا على إجراء تكاملات قائمة على قاعدة نظرية ناضجة، وسنرى من ناحية أخرى أن عديداً من الطرق تلزم للتأني للمعادلات غير الخطية، ولكن ليس هنالك ما يضمن أن أياً منها ستنتج، لهذا ستبدو الطرق التي تعرضها كأنها حشد من الحيل.
إنها على كل حال تقوم على ثلاثة مبادئ أساسية: التعويض، وفصل المتغيرات، والضرب بإقتران مناسب.
