ما أعمق الفور الذي نفذت إليه الحرب العالمية الأولى ولا تزال في ضمير الإنسان الحديث. لقد أعادت تشكيل النسق السياسي الذي كانت عليه أوربا وقسم كبير من آسيا، وهو بلادنا العربية. من قبل ولا تزال ذكرياتها الأليمة تنتصب واقفة في كل قرية ومدينة من الدول التي جرى فيها القتال، من ضفاف نهر "المارن" إلى "كوت العمارة" و"سكة حديد الحجاز" حتى بعد أن يغي على نصرامها زمن طويل. وفي هذا الكتاب يحاول المؤلف البحث في هذه الحرب الفاجعة يهدف أن يقرأها الناس في صور وباستشراف تاريخي هي، لذلك عمد إلى غربلة ما وقع بين يديه من مصادر مزوداً المعلومات المستخلصة يصدر منها القديم ومنها ما يعرض لأول مرة. بالإضافة إلى ذلك فقد عمد المؤلف إلى شرح السبب الذي من جرائه نشب ذلك الصراع المرير. وغايته من ذلك إثبات ذلك التناقض الظاهري في أن الرجال الذين انغمسوا في الحرب كانوا مندفعين بحماس إلى اصطلاء نارها بالمشاركة فيها، مع أنهم يكرهونها من أعماقهم. لم يحاول المؤلف أن يجعل من كتابه هذا "تأريخاً" للحرب، بقدر ما كان همه أن يقوم بعرضها عرض، لهذا هو تجاوز الخوض في أسباب تلك الحرب ونتائجها، كما أنه لم يعمد إلى التفصيل في شرح المواقع الحربية مقتصراً على إيضاح الخطط العامة التي تبناها القادة العسكريين فيها، ذلك أن نفسية الحرب هي محط الشاهد من هذا العرض، وذلك لاستخلاص العبرة من هذه الحرب ليتعظ بها الجيل الجديد.
