إن زاهر بن عواض الألمعي معدودٌ في أول الشعراء من منطقة عسير الذين أصدروا ديواناً مطبوعاً، إذ أصدر ديوانه "الألمعيات" عام 1391هــ / 1971م، وهو العام نفسه الذي أصدر فيه الشاعر أحمد بيهان ديوانه الأول "هيكل الحياة". وشعره مرتبط بالحياة ويعانق فيه الذاتي الجمعي والعامُ والخاص، ولذلك ارتبط شعره بمناسبات كانت موقعاً لصوته الشاعر ومسؤوليته الإجتماعية والإنسانية.
ومن هنا، فقد أخذ إحتفاء نادي أبها الأدبي بتجربة الأستاذ الدكتور زاهر بن عواض الألمعي منحيين: المنحى الأول: إحتفالي وافق الليلة الثقافية الألمعية بنادي أبها الأدبي ضمن برنامج النادي الصيفي، أما المنحى الثاني فهو إصدار نتاجه الأدبي، المتمثل في جمع دواوينه كافة وما لم ينشر من شعره في مجموعة شعرية كاملة، وإعادة طباعة سيرته الأدبية "رحلة الثلاثين عاماً".
وقد رأت لجنة الطباعة التي عملت على جمع شعره وطباعته، أن يكون ترتيب الدواوين حسب تاريخ صدورها، ثم القصائد التي وردت في (مرائي الألمعي) ولم ترد في الدواوين، ثم القصائد التي لم تنشر في كتاب أو ديوان من قبل، مع إثبات تواريخ الطبعات لكل ديوان، وتصويب اخطاء الطباعة والأخطاء الإملائية، ومقابلة جميع القصائد على أصولها الورقية، وقراءة جميع القصائد وضبط أبياتها بالشكل اللازم، وبإختصار عدد من مقدمات القصائد، وتوحيد منهج عرض القصائد من حيث الإخراج، وإعداد فهرس للقوافي ييسر الوصول إلى القصائد.
