إن علم التوحيد أشرف العلوم فإن فيه معرفة الله تعالة بأسمائه وصفاته وكلما كان الشخص عالماً بالله كان أشد له طاعة وحباً وتعظيماً وقد أخذ الصحابة ذلك من النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وأخذ عنهم التابعون وحصل بعد ذلك خلاف من بعض المبتدعة، فعطلوا الصفات، وبعضهم أولوها، وحرفوها فقام العلماء من أهل السنة رحمهم الله فكتبوا عقيدة السلف ودونوها، وردوا على الجهمية المعطلة وعلى المعتزلة المحرفة، وعلى الأشاعرة المتأولة، وغيرهم من أهل البدع. فكتب علماء عقيدة السلف في ضمن كتبهم، كالبخاري في "صحيحه" كتاب الاعتصام وكتاب الإيمان والتوحيد، وكذلك مسلم وغيرهما، وكتب بعضهم كتباً مستقلة في ذلك مثل كتاب "التوحيد" لابن خزيمة. وكتاب "السنة" لابن أبي عاصم. وغير ذلك ومن بعدهم، وردود شيخ الإسلام ابن تيمية وابن القيم وغيرهم فرحم الله الجميع، ومن ضمن هذه الكتب النافعة في التوحيد كتاب ابن منده الذي بين أيدينا فهو كتاب قيم من أحسنها فهو يهتم بسرد الأدلة في الباب من الكتاب والسنة وآثار السلف، مما يحتاج إليه بالأسانيد على طريقة حسنة وترتيب حسن وتجده يسوق الأسانيد في المتابعات ليقوي ما استدل به وهو على طريقة السلف لا يتكلف.
