كان ينبغي لكل أحد أن يشنِّف ساعاته الأولى بقرع النواقيس... وهي تؤذّن بالصُّبح أن: "حَيَّ على خير الأدب"، حتى كأنّ ترجيعها الغادي على مطايا الضوء زفَّة العروس الشمس الطالعة من خدرها.
وكان ينبغي لهذه النواقيس أن تَجْمعَ أصداءها بين دفتي كتاب، صياناً لها من الذوبان في خلايا الأثير... فإن السطر مسبحة المعاني، والورقَ مسبحُ الأصوات.
على أن النقيب، بإصراره على تربيع الناقوس كلّ احد سحابة سنين طوال، إنّما كان يدعو الآذانَ إلى طرب، والنفوسَ إلى دفءٍ، والعقولَ إلى سلام، فِعْلَ الصلاة التي هي، في أصلها، مدارج إرتقاء، ومعارج صفاء.
ولعلّه حين انتدب نفسه لهذه المهمة، كان يستعيد من الذاكرة ما كتبه مرة أنّ حكواتيّاً من القرنِ الماضي كان يتلو على الحاضرين في أحد مقاهي الميناء سيرة الظاهر بيبرس، وكيف أنّ مئتين من البطاريق، على ذمة السيرة، هاجموه؛ فضرب بسيفه ميمنة، فقتل منهم مئة، ثم ميسرة، فأباد المئة الأخرى... وفرّ الباقون، وكيف أنّ أحد المستمعين صرخ بالراوي عند ذاك: على رِسْلك يا رجل، اترك ولو واحداً يدّق لنا جرس الكنيسة في الآحاد.
نحمد الله أنّ الوزير رشيد درباس لم يزلّ في هذه الدولة الكافرة، يقرع على المسامع المؤمنة ناقوس الأدب والوطنية.
