لهذا الكتاب "رياض النفوس" أهمية قد لا تغني عنه فيها كتب التاريخ العام، فبينما لا يقدم لنا ابن الأثير وابن خلدون وابن عذارى والنويري إلا تواريخ الأحداث السياسية لعصر ولاة بني أمية وأوائل العباسيين ودول الأغالبة والعبيديين وبني زيري، نجد صاحب الرياض يورد من الأقاصيص والأخبار عن الحياة العامة السياسية منها وغير السياسية ما يمكن من كشف النقاب عن بعض نواحي ذلك الظلام الدامس الذي يحيط بأحوال أفريقية في تلك العصور بالإضافة إلى ذلك فإن الواقع على رياض النفوس يجتني أمرين؛ الأول أخبار مقاومة أهل السنة بالقيروان للدعوة الشيعية التي حاول عبيد الله المهدي وخلفاؤه ومن بعده فرضها جبراً على سكان البلاد. وهي أحداث خلت من ذكرها بالتفصيل المجاميع التاريخية الكبيرة. الثاني: أخبار المرابطة في المعاقل والحسون التي أنشأها عرب أفريقية على شاطئ البحر الأبيض المتوسط اتقاء مهاجمة الروم للسواحل المغربية مع بيان حياة المرابطين في غضون القرنين الثاني والثالث للهجرة تلك الظاهرة العجيبة التي تفرد من بها أفريقية، لما فرضه عليها موقعها الجغرافي، دون غيرها من بلاد الإسلام هذا بالإضافة إلى احتواء الكتاب على الكثير من النصوص ذات الصلة الوثقى بالحضارة والثقافة واللغة بعضها اندثر وبعضها ما يزال حياً في اللهجة التونسية. وإذا أضفنا إلى ذلك ما أصيبت به المكتبة العربية في أفريقية من نكبات خلال العصور مما جعلنا نعرف الكثير من أسماء كتب الطبقات والسير والمغازي والتاريخ العام والخاص دون أن يكون لها أثر في المشرق أو المغرب أو الوقوف على أعيانها، إذا أضفنا ذلك كله أدركنا مدى الأهمية التي يمكن أن يؤديها نشر كتاب "رياض النفوس" للمالكي بكامله.
