كتاب عظيم لم ينل من الشهرة ما يجدر به، ولم يعرفه الناس بالقدر الذي عرفوا به ما هو أقل منه وأدنى نفعاً من الكتب والمصنفات. ألفه الشيخ المحدث شمس الدين محمد بن أحمد المقري، المنسوب إلى مقرة (القريبة من قسنطينة في الجزائر)، من علماء القرن السابع (وأول الثامن) الهجري.عمد في كتابه هذا -كما أشار في مقدمته- إلى "استصفاء مستحسن الحكايات ومستجود الروايات من الكتب القديمة، ليكون عوناً على المذاكرة وتنبيهاً على حسن المفاكهة والمحاضرة"، وأراد بذلك أن يستصفي الحكايات الرشيقة والأخبار النادرة من ركام القصص والأخبار والأشعار القديمة، ويختصر الروايات الطويلة بعبارات قصيرة يمكن استيعابها ومذاكرتها، لعل من يقرؤها "يتخلق بخلق رضي، أوي تعلق بسبب زكي، أو يشبه بفعل مرضي، أو يتأدب بأدب سني".
وقد نقل عن مصادر كثيرة -أشار إلى بعضها- مثل "عيون الأخبار"، و"المسالك والممالك"، و"الأغاني"، و"العقد الفريد"، و"ثمرات الأوراق"، و"البيان والتبيين"، و"نهاية الأرب"، و"الأمالي القالي" وغيرها.
وقد قسم كتابه إلى أبواب، خصص كل باب منها لذكر طائفة من الأخبار والقصص والشعار المتعلقة بموضوع واحد مثل فعائل الأجواد الكرماء، واصطناع المعرفة وإغاثة الملهوف، والحلم وطيب ثمرته، والعفو وحسن عاقبته، والتخلص بالبلاغة وحسن الاعتذار، والوفود على الخلفاء وأهل الكلام والوفاء، والحب والهوى، وسرعة أجوبة الأذكياء، وغير ذلك من الموضوعات والأخبار والنوادر.
وقد طبع هذا الكتاب قديماً بمصر -منذ نحو مئة سنة-، إن ما يميز هذه الطبعة هو التحقيق القيم الذي قام به الدكتور أنور أبو سويلم (رئيس دائرة العلوم الإنسانية بجامعة مؤتة بالأردن) الذي اعتمد على مخطوطة كتبها المؤلف بخطة سنة 701هـ، ونسختين أخريين في مكتبة الأوقاف بحلب ودار الكتب المصرية، وقد جاء عمله غاية في الجهد والإتقان.
