يعالج هذا الكتاب الذي يعتبر الأول من نوعه في المكتبة العربية، جميع الآلات الموسيقية التي عزف عليها في العراق القديم منذ أقدم عصر جاءتنا منه آثار لها علاقة بالآلات الموسيقية أي في (حوالي 3000ق.م)، لغاية انتهاء العصر الفرثي (247ق.م-226ب.م)، وذلك طبقاً لتسلسل الأدوار الزمنية لتاريخ العراق. ومما يمتاز به هذا الكتاب عن الكتب الأجنبية أنه احتوى على قطع أثرية ومعلومات جديدة وعدد ضخم من الصور والرسوم مما لا وجود لها في أي كتاب كتب في هذا الموضوع، هذا بالإضافة إلى أنه عالج جميع الآلات الموسيقية خلال فترات معدودات بصورة موجزة، أو عالجت آلتين فقط خلال فترتين أو ثلاث. ويسهل هذا الكتاب على القارئ العربي الوقوف على آراء الباحثين الأجانب في هذا الموضوع، ويزوده بأحدث وأوفى المعلومات حول الآلات الموسيقية في العراق القديم.
