قامت كثير من الثورات الشيعية في التاريخ وبعضها قد نجحت في أخذ زمام الحكم، مثل الفاطميين في مصر والبويهيين في العراق، وكذلك حكم الشيعة في أندونيسيا قرابة 300 عام، وكذلك الدولة الحمدانية في حلب وغيرها، وهناك الكثير من الثورات الشيعية التي قامت ضد الحكم الظالم في زمانها لم تنجح في السيطرة على الحكم.
أما الثورات الشيعية التي نجحت في الأخذ بزمام الأمور فهي كانت قد خططت لما بعد انتصار الثورة، من بناء كوادر متمكنة من قيادة البلاد... ومن هذه الثورات كانت ثورة المختار بن أبي عبيد الثقفي رضي الله عنه التي نجحت في السيطرة على الحكم وإدارة البلاد الإسلامية من الكوفة (العاصمة).
وهذه الثورة كان قد خطط لها من قبل نشوبها بعدة سنوات، ونجحت نجاحاً باهراً أرعب قلوب الأمويين في الشام والزبيريين في الحجاز. والأقوال قد تضاربت في بيان شخصية المختار الفريدة من نوعها في ذلك الزمن، فقد وصفت بالكذب ونسب إليها مذهب الكيسانية وغير من الأوصاف التي لا تليق بهذه الشخصية الخيرة التي جاهدت في سبيل إرجاع الحق إلى أهل البيت عليهم السلام والأخذ بثأرهم، وقد سجنت عدة مرات في سبيل ذلك.
ويسعى هذا الكتاب لدراسة شخصية المختار وثورته العملاقة بشيء من التفصيل، حيث اعتمدت على أمهات المصادر التاريخية الكبرى التي تؤرخ القرن الأول الهجري، واعتمدت أيضاً على آراء علماء الرجال لدراسة أحوال بعض الرجال وثيقي الصلة بالمختار ونهضته. لم تستغن عن الرأي الفقهي، ليتبين مدى ارتباط بعض الخطوات التي أقدم عليها المختار ورجاله بالشريعة الإسلامية.
