النصوص التي جمعها غابرييل غارسيا ماركيز في هذا الكتاب كُتبت لنقرأ أمام جمهور، وهي تغطي عملياً حياته كلها، منذ النص الذي كتبه في السابعة عشرة من عمره لوداع زملائه في الفصل الأخير بمدرسة ثيباكيرا، عام 1944، حتى النص الذي قرأه أمام أكاديمية اللغة وبحضور ملكي إسبانيا عام 2007.
في النصوص الأولى يظهر واضحاً الصدود الذي يشعر به الكاتب الكولومبي تجاه الخطابة، "لم آتِ لألقي خطاباً"، هذا هو التنبيه الذي يقدمه لزملاء المدرسة في المرة الأولى التي يصعد فيها إلى المنصة، وهي الجملة التي اختارها كاتبنا عنواناً لهذا الكتاب.
وفي النص التالي "كيف بدأتُ الكتابة"، والذي قرأه كمؤلف ناجح ومشهور لرواية مئة عام من العزلة، في العام 1970، ينبه مستمعيه مسبقاً إلى نفوره من الخطابة: "بدأتُ أصير كاتباً بالطريقة نفسها التي صعدت بها إلى هذه المنصة: مكرهاً" وفي محاولته الثالثة، عند تلقيه جائزة روميلو غاييغوس، عام 1972، يؤكد أنه قد رضي "الإقدام على عمل شيئين من الأشياء التي عاهدت نفسي على عدم القيام بها أبداً: تلقي جائزة وإلقاء خطاب".
بعد عشر سنوات من ذلك تلقى غابرييل غارسيا ماركيز جائزة نوبل في الآداب، ووجد نفسه تحت وطأة الحاجة الملحة إلى كتابة أهم خطاب يمكن لأي كاتب أن يواجهه في حياته، وكانت النتيجة عملاً بارعاً: "عزلة أميركا اللاتينية"، ومنذ ذلك الحين، تحولت الخطابة إلى جنس أدبي أساسي في مسيرته ككاتب يتلقى التقدير والتكريم، وكان حضوره وكلماته مطلوبة على طول هذا العالم وعرضه.
