عندما أقدمَ الأستاذ جوزف الشرقاوي على خوض غمار هذا البحث الشاق، لم يكن يدرك – مثل أي باحث آخر – مصاعب هذه الرسالة البحثية الجامعية التي تنتهي في كتاب، اليوم. فقد أتى من الدراسة الدقيقة، المالية، صوب درسٍ آخر، لا يقل دقةً، وهو درسُ الفلسفة، ثم درسُ فلسفة الفن تحديدًا. ولم يتوقف إقدامُه عند هذا الحد، وإنما طلبَ درس عدد من كتبي، الخاصة بالفن الإسلامي، التي تقترح نقدًا شديدًا للخطاب الساري في هذا الميدان.
عاد الشرقاوي إلى كتبي وبحوثي، ونجح في استخلاص المنظور الذي حكمَ قراءتي لهذا الفن، في متنه المادي أو في متنه الكتابي. هذا ما أسميتُه "الاستشراق الأبقى"… إذ إن مواد هذا الفن انتقلت من سياقه ومواضعه إلى سياقات أخرى (أوروبية، ثم غربية)، محوِّلة له، وفق شروطِ حفظٍ وعرضٍ غير التي كانت عليه في سابقها. كما خضعت مواد هذا الفن لعمليات نظرٍ وتقويمٍ وتأريخٍ وتفلسفٍ مستجدة… انتقل هذا الفن من القصر إلى المتحف… باختصار، ومن المجموع الفني (قصر، كتاب…) إلى أن يكون "قطعًا مُفْرَدة"، مجموعةً ومعروضةً للنظر وفق منطق "اللوحة".
مخاطر الإقدام في مسعى الشرقاوي انتهت، في حاصلها البحثي والكتابي، إلى أن تكون جهدًا رصينًا يُسهم في تمكين الخطاب العربي من تاريخه الثقافي ومسائله.
