الذاكرة إحدى فضاءات الغياب التي شاعت لدى الأديب العراقي فاضل السلطاني في تجربته الشعرية ، ومن أبرز تلك الأعمال التي حملت إلينا فضاءات الذاكرة وأغوارها العيمقة " عند منتصف الذاكرة " هذا العنوان الحامل لدلالة الغياب ، يتجسد أكثر في تجربة الغربة التي عاشها الشاعر بعيداً عن الوطن الأم والتي رشح عنها إصدارات أدبية في مجال الشعر والترجمة والدراسات المقارنة قلّ مثيلها عند آخرون ، هذه التجربة جاءت عبر سعي الشاعر الحثيث نحو الخير ، والجمال ، والحياة ، والحب ، والحلم . لهذا كانت القصائد محاكاة لهذه الحالة الإنسانية التي عاشها والتي تجسدت أيضاً بخطابه الشعري الدال على غربة الإنسان بانفصاله عن زملائه ومكانه . ومن هنا يكتسب النص قوته ، وشاعريته ، أكثر فأكثر .
في القصيدة المعنونة ( العودة ) يقول الشاعر فاضل السلطاني :
" سأعودُ / قد يعرفني النخلُ المقطوعُ الأعناقِ / وبعض الأشجارْ / قد يعرفني بعضُ الأحجارْ / سيحييني بعضُ الطيرِ اللابدِ في الوكناتْ . / سأقول : صباحُ الخيرْ / ها أنذا عدتُ / ما زلت كما كنتُ / قد يعرفني بعض الأمواتْ / فيزيح التربّ عن القبر : / - سلاماً .. / أين رحلتَ طويلاً ؟ / ما زلتَ كما كنتَ / كأنكَ متَّ / فما مرت في البعدِ عليك حياة . ؟ سأعود ( ... ) " .
يضم الكتاب قصائداً في الشعر العربي الحديث جاءت تحت العناوين الآتية : " صورة " ، " وحشة " ، " سهام " ، " ولادة " ، " أمي " ، " حفلة في سوهو " ، " عابرة في شارع دمشقي " ، " صبرية " ، " بابل .. بابليون " ، " عشتار في متحف برلفين " ، " ألوان السيدة المتغيرة " ( ... ) " .
كيف تكلكلَ فوقي الليلُ، تلك اللحظةَ، في سوهو، حيث تعبُّ الأرض الضوء من كلِّ زوايا الكونِ، فتكوّرت الحربُ، وانتشر الجندُ الموتى فوق البارِ، حيث انهمر النورُ من زاويةً في الكونِ على ساقِ امرأةٍ عابرةٍ، تلك اللحظةَ، في سوهو؟ من أين أتى الجند الموتى وهمُ ماتوا قبلي ورأيتُ قبورهمُ في زاويةٍ في تلك الأرض؟ كيف انتشروا في البارِ نظيفين من الموتِ ثمَّ تصاحبنا، ورفعنا نخبَ العشاق المخدوعين.
