يعنى هذا الكتاب بتأريخ العلم، وبعبارة أوضح: بالتأريخ للعلوم بمختلف أصنافها ومصادرها: العلوم الشرقية، وعلوم العصر القديم (البابلية، واليونانية، والفارسية، واللاتينية...)، في نقلها، أو في انتقالها، إلى العرب، هؤلاء الذين تمثلوها، وأضافوا إليها، على ما تفعل الحضارة المبدعة: تتناول، وتتمثل، وتضيف، وتناول... ثم تنتقل، هذه العلوم "العربية" إلى الأندلس، وهناك-في طليطلة، التي كانت قد خرجت من أيدي الأندلسيين-تعمل "مدرسة المترجمين" في نقل الصفوة من هذه العلوم إلى اللاتينية، وإلى القشتالية والقطلونية، وإلى العبرية...
وقد قسم المؤلف أزمان انتقال العلوم العربية حسب القرون الميلادية، ورصدها رصداً أوفى على الغاية. ولم يشأ أن يخلي كتابه من حديث مستطرد عن الأدب، فكتب عما أبدعه الأندلسيون في مجال الأدب والفن، وخص الأدب القصصي بالفصل الأخير.
وسوف تتراءى لك، وأنت تقرأ فصول هذا الكتاب، معارف "الحضارة العربية الإسلامية" أمواجا... تتدافع من بغداد العراق نحو قرطبة الأندلس... وهناك تمضي مويجات منها، بفعل النقل والترجمة، فيء اتجاه الشمال، لتدخل أوروبة، وتنداح في منظوماتها الثقافية... وما هو إلا حين حتى يكون قد أن لفجر "النهضة الأوروبية" أن يبزغ!
ويعد البروفسور "خوان فيرنيت"، المولود في برشلومة العام 1923 والذي يشغل كرسي الأستاذية بجامعتها منذ 1954، من أشهر المستشرقين الإسبان المعاصرين. وهو عضو في عدد من الأكاديميات الإسبانية والعربية والدولية.
أنجز ترجمتين لمعاني القرآن الكريم إلى الإسبانية (1952 و1963)، كما ترجم إليها حكايات "ألف ليلة" كاملة (1964).
ومن أهم أعماله كتابه هذا، الذي ننقله اليوم عن الإسبانية مباشرة، وقد سبقت ترجمته إلى الألمانية والفرنسية.
ينظر إلى البروفسور خوان فيرنيت على أنه هو الذي رسخ أسس دراسة تاريخ العلوم العربية في الجامعة المركزية ببرشلونة.
من مقولاته أن الكون، عند بعض العلماء العرب، تبلغ أبعاده عدة سنين ضوئية.
