ولد جورج "غوْردِنْ في 22 كانون الثاني سنة 1788، وكان أبوه جون بيرون فاتكاً ماجناً، تزوّج مرّة أولى فرزق ابنته "أوغستة" (1783- 1851)، وما لبث أن طلق إمرأته ليتزوّج من ثانية (1786) ولدت له الشاعر، ولكن الأب لم ينعم بالمولود طويلاً، فعاجلته المنّية عام 1891، وكانت والدة بيرون مريضة المزاج، صاخبة الأهواء شأن أبيها - وأبوها مات إنتحاراً.
وعهدت بإبنها إلى من درس عليه اللاتينية، ثم قرأ فرجيل وشيشرون والتوراة، ووقف على مذب كالفان، ثم قضى عمه اللورد المشؤوم عام 1798 مخلفاً لابن أخيه قصر نيوستد، فاتسعت ذات يد الفتى، وتسنّى له أن يختلف إلى جامعة "هَرُو" وأن يتابع علومه في "كامبردج" (1705- 1808)، وما غادرها إلا وقد أرشد.
وهو في هذه الحقبة يعاني ما يعانيه من عرجه ونقصه، وجعل ثمة يجوب الأقطاب من لندن إلى لشبونه (1809) فمالطة، فالبانيا، فآثينا، فآسيا الصغرى، معرّجاً على "أفسس" (18 آذار 1801)، مستقراً في الأستانة حيناً، قافلاً إلى أثينا حيناً آخر، ولما عاد إلى مسقط رأسه، بلغه نعيّ أمه فقال: "كان لي صديق فمات، فغدوت الآن وحيداً".
واتخذ الحاضرة الإنكليزية مقراً له، ونشر مجموعة تشيلد هرولد (1812) فطارت شهرته واتصل بالخاصّة المفكرة في بيئته، وارسل المجموعات الأخرى تباعاً (الفالس، أقاصيص تركية، القرصان، ساعات تراخي...).
وكان يلقى في كل مرحلة حبيباً، وفي كل مجموعة وجه عشيقٍ جديد، فجمعه بأخته حبّ أثيم (سببه ما كان بينهما من تشابه)، ثم تزوج بالآنسة "ملبنك" زواجاً أخفق، فعوّل على الرحيل، وغادر الجزر البريطانية إلى الأبد، مُنتحياً إيطاليا، متنقّلاً بين مواخيرها عساء يفر من الإثم الذي أتاه.
وكان كلما أفاق فيه ذكر الماضي تخدّر بسفرٍ أو بجسد إمرأة جديدة، يتمتع بها حيناً ثم يلفظها، هكذا كان دأبه من "ميلانو" إلى "فيرونا"، إلى البندقيّة، وروما، وشبت نيران الثورة اليونانية فعين عضواً في لجنة الدفاع عنها، فرضي علّه أن يأتي عملاً يمحو به ما كان.
ولكنْ الإسراف أنهكه، ولم يُجده فتيلاً، واشتد عليه ضيق في الصدر، ولزمته نوبات عصبية تركته طريح الفراش، وكان في غيبوبته، وفي هذيانه يهتف: "إلى الإمام!... إلى الإمام!... تشجعوا!".
وفي الساعة السادسة من 19 نيسان، الموافق اثنين الفصح عام 1834، صرعه الموت وهو في السادسة والثلاثين، ثم انتزع قلبه، وأرسل إلى لندن، حيث استودع جانب مذبح كنيسة Hucknall Torkard.
