ألف الغزالي كتابه "تهافت الفلاسفة" سنة 884هـ/1095م، وألف ابن رشد كتاب "تهافت التهافت" نحو سنة 575هـ/1180م ردّاً على كتاب أبي حامد "تهافت الفلاسفة". وقد أحدث هذا الكتاب منذ ظهوره دوياً هائلاً في الأوساط الدينية والفلسفية، جعل الكثير من أنصار الفلسفة يظنون أن الفلسفة قد انتصرت بهذا الكتاب لنفسها، وأن ابن رشد قد أفحم به الغزالي ومريديه، فلم تقم لهم قائمة من بعده.
يمهد ابن رشد لكتابه "تهافت التهافت" بمقدمة وجيزة يقول فيها بأن غرضه من كتابه هذا هو بيان مراتب الأقاويل المثبتة في كتاب التهافت لأبي حامد في التصديق والإقناع، وقصور أكثرها عن مرتبة اليقين والبرهان. هذه المقدمة تشتمل على عميق معنىً، إذ المراد بالأقاويل المثبتة في كتاب التهافت: ردود الغزالي على الفلاسفة، ومقولات ابن سينا-كما عرضها الغزالي-معاً. وابن رشد في ردوده وتحاليله وشروحاته لا ينتصر لرجل على رجل، بل للفلسفة ما عداها، وإن أصاب بسهامه واحداً من أشد المخلصين للفلسفة من متكلمي الإسلام (ابن سينا).
وكان مرجع ابن رشد الدائم في تمييزه الخطأ من الصواب هو أرسطو، ومعياره-كما يصرح في موضع من الكتاب-هو البرهان، لا الجدل أو السفسطة، وهدفه هو نصرة الحق، وإظهار الحقيقة، كما يراها، لا نصرة مذهب أو جماعة.
هذا وإذا كان "تهافت التهافت" قد ووجه بتعتيم شديد في الأوساط العربية القديمة، ولم يكن يذكر إلا ملحقاً بكتاب "تهافت الفلاسفة" فإن هذا الكتاب قد لقي رواجاً واسعاً في الأوساط العربية واللاتينية، حيث انكب عليه المترجمون اليهود واللاتين شرحاً وترجمة ودراسة، واستعان بآرائه الكثير من مفكريهم في دحض مزاعم خصومهم في الصراعات الفلسفية والدينية التي بدأت تعنف بين رجال الفكر والكنيسة في أوروبا منذ أوائل القرن الميلادي الثالث عشر.
وجاء الكتاب في هذه الطبعة محققاً حيث استهل المحقق العمل بمقدمة وضعت القارئ في جوّ الكتابين: "تهافت الفلاسفة" و"تهافت التهافت": هدفاً ومنهجاً وأسلوباً، حيث ترك له حرية الخيار في الخروج بتصور واضح عن أهداف كل منها، ومقدار حظه من الصواب، بعيداً عن عبارات التقريظ والثناء، أو الذم والاتهام المسبقات.
