"العرب" كتاب حاول فيه مؤلفه، أن يعطي صورة مجملة للعرب من خلال تاريخهم، وهمه منصرف قبل كل شيء، وفي أول منزلة، إلى التاريخ العربي المعاصر، وتَبَيُّن الحلقات والنقاط التي تربط أو تصل الحاضر بالماضي. ولما كان المؤلف قد وضع كتابه عام 1955، وهو الذي عاشى حتى 1968، فقد اضطر في الطبعة الثانية من هذا الكتاب إضافة فصل يستدرك به مآخذه على نفسه. ومن الواضح بأن لهذا الكتاب فضلاً أو ميزة غير موجودة في غيره من الكتب التي تناولت موضوعه سواء بالإنكليزية أو الفرنسية أو العربية، على كثرة الذين تناولوا هذا الموضوع من الأجانب والوطنيين. وميزته الكبرى أنه يحرك ذهن قارئه، ويحمله على التفكير، أو يزين له التفكير بعبارة أدق، في كل ما عرض من شؤون وأحداث، إذ يربط الحياة السياسية ربطاً محكماً، كما هي حالها في الواقع، بشؤون الاجتماع، وقضايا الاقتصاد، ومظاهر الثقافة ومستوياتها.
هذه الميزة في هذا الكتاب هي التي تجعله جديراً باهتمام كل قارئ، كما تجعله جديراً بالتوجيه غلى لغة القوم الذين يتحدث عنهم، فهو يعنيهم وإن كتب بلغة غيرهم، ولهم وحدهم أن يفيدوا بتحسين الصورة التي رسمها لهم المؤلف عن طريق الأعمال والمنجزات، والأخذ بالمقترحات والإرشادات، ثم بتصحيح الأخطاء وملء ثغرات الفراغ التي يجدونها في هذه الخطوط الإجمالية لماضيهم، وحاضرهم، وحتى لمستقبلهم كما تصوره المؤلف. وهذا ما لفت النظر إلى ضرورة ترجمة هذا الكتاب لوضعه بلغة الذين تحدث عنهم المؤلف، وبذلك كل جهد في الإفادة من أفكاره وآرائه. وقد تم إغناء الكتاب بتعليقات مفيدة وضرورية على بعض النقاط الواردة فيه، مع بيان ما هو بحاجة ماسة إلى بيانه في هذا الكتاب.
