في محاولة لإيجاد البديل من واقعه الأليم، يسعى باسوناري كاواباتا إلى الأدب ليجد فيه عزاءً في فقدان والديه وأخته الوحيدة وجدّته ثم جده. سيداعب كاواباتا بحنان وتأثر، كما سيفعل لاحقاً في هذه القصة العجوز ايفوشي في صراعه مع الجميلات النائمات. قبور أحبائه... عمّ بإمكانه أن يتكلم!... عن الوحدة والموت والحب والجنس، المعاني التي تحملها ذكريات مرهفة عن حدائق ومشاهد وفصول تتراءى في عالم ايفرشي العجوز... في أي عالم سيدخل هذا العجوز عند اجتيازه عتبة "الجميلات النائمات" هذه الرواية التي تصور سعي العجائز المصابين في رغباتهم... إنما هي آفاق يفتحها كاواباتا على عالمه القابع في حدود ذاكرته، نفسه، وآلامه... في عالم ناء بحمل آلامه فرحل تاركاً رواياته تحدث عنه.
