موضوع هذا الكتاب - بل قضيته المحورية - مركب؛ صحيح أن ميدانه الرواية، ولكن أية رواية؟ إنها الرواية العربية ذات العناصر الملحمية المتوهجة.
ليس هذا فحسب، بل رواية الأجيال ذات العناصر الملحمية، ومسح اضطرت الكاتبة للقيام به في إطار هذه القيود الفنية: المستوى المتقدم، والملحمية، والأجيال، إضافة إلى سعيها الموضوعي - وهذا قيد آخر - لإختيار نماذج تمثل الرواية العربية في مشرق الوطن العربي ومغربه، ولكنها قبلت التحدي، وخاضت التجربة.
وقد تعمقت الباحثة في مفهوم "الملحمية" في الرواية، ولم يكن بسطها الأولي لمفهوم متماسك نهض على أسس فنية متكاملة أبقى من الملحمية "ملحمة" واحتفظ للرواية بعناصرها الجوهرية لتظل رواية أولاً وأخيراً، ولكنها رواية تستمد من الملحمة العمق التاريخي، والفضاء الأسطوري، والنزوع الشعري، والروح الجمعي، ثم السعي للإنتصار.
وأما النماذج الروائية فقد اختارتها بعناية محكمة في إنسجامها والمقولات التي ترتكز إليها.
