يعتبر "إدغار ألن بو" أول أديب أميركي ذي شأن، وقد تجاوز أثره حدود أميركا، فكان مسؤولاً، إلى حدٍّ كبير، عن نشوء الإتجاه الرمزي في الأدب الأوروبي عامة والفرنسي خاصة، وممن اعجبوا به وترجموا له، الشاعر الكبير "شارل بودلير".
في هذه المجموعة القصصية التي اختارتها ونقلتها إلى العربية الناقدة المعروفة "خالدة سعيد"، يجد القارئ متعة قلماً يجدها في قاص آخر، لقد أطلق هذا الأديب الكبير المخيلة الإنسانية من عقالها بحيث تكشفت لها أسرار الطبيعة والنفس البشرية.
وتتألف هذه المجموعة من اثني عشر قصة تعكس مخيلة "إدغار آلن بو" وليست المخيلة التوهم، ليست كذلك الحساسية وإن كان صعباً تصور إنسان خيالي غير حساس المخيلة طاقة شبه إلهية، تكتشف بعيداً عن المناهج الفلسفية وخارجها، العلائق الحميمة بين الأشياء، وأسرارها ويطابقها وتجانسها، كما تحقق المخيلة أغرب النتائج وتجني الكنوز الأكثر عدداً وتنوعاً.
في القصة القصيرة إن بو يؤثرها على القصة الطويلة، لكثافة تأثيرها وتحليته ووحدة الإنطباع الذي تولده، وكثيراً ما تكون الحقيقة هدف القصة القصيرة، والتعليل هو أفضل أداة استخدمها المؤلف لبناء قصة قصيرة كامل؛ كما يجب التنويه أنه لم يتخدّث أي إنسان بسحر أروع من سحر حديثه عن الإستثناءات والمفارقات في الحياة الإنسانية وفي الطبيعة: نهايات الفصول المثقلة بالبهاء المُسكر، الساعات الدافئة، الرطبة الضبابية حيث الريح الجنوبية تُرخي الأعصاب كالحبال، وحيث تمتلئ العيون بدمع لا يأتي من القلب، التهاويل التي تفتح الطريق أولاً للشك، ثم لا تلبث أن تصيرَ مقنعة، مليئة بالبراهين كالكتاب، العبث الذي يسكن في البصيرة ويحكمها وفق منطق رهيب، التهيج العصبي الذي يغتصب الإرادة ويذللها، التناقض القائم بين الأعصاب والفكر، الإنسان المتصدّع إلى درجة التعبير عن الألم والضحك.
إنه يحلّل أكثر الأشياء هروباً وتفلتاً من التحليل، إنه يزن ما يُوزن، إنه يصف بطريقة محكمة وعلمية مخيفة، هذا العالم الخيالي الذي يتموّج حول الإنسان العصبي ويتحكم به ويقوده.
